OSTRANENIE OR MAKING STRANGE: CREATIVE WRITING FOR FILM

OSTRANENIE OR MAKING STRANGE: CREATIVE WRITING FOR FILM

2 sessions: Friday, February 23 and Friday, March 1

2 - 4 PM PACIFIC via ZOOM

Workshop Facilitator: Andrea Márquez, Zooming in from London!

In this writing workshop for filmmakers and writers we will explore the possibilities offered by the use of written and spoken texts in films and art works following specific prompts and creative stimuli. We will look at film extracts in which texts are used in non traditional ways creating curious narrative devices. We will explore forms of estrangement (ostranenie in Russian) related to the use of text and the use of narrative techniques.

We will discuss short scenes from Chantal Akerman, Chris Marker, Agnes Varda, Jean-Luc Godard, David Lynch, Andrei Tarkovsky, Thom Andersen and John Smith’s films.

Whether you’re a filmmaker looking to find personal ways to express that idea you have in mind, or someone who’s trying to write something new, this workshop is for you!

Feel free to bring your footage, texts and ideas to share and discuss.

Free workshop! Space is limited! Sign up by sending an email with CINEMATIC WRITING in the subject line to: epfccollective@gmail.com
