Eiki 16mm 3580 SSL Projector Care and Repair Workshop
Online via Zoom; 11 am - 2 pm PDT. I
Co-sponsored by Interbay Cinema Society and Northwest Film Forum
Moderated by Echo Park Film Center
Taught by Kristin Reeves
The EIKI 16mm 3580 SSL projector is a workhorse machine for microcinemas, experimental filmmakers, film workshop & classroom teachers, film artists and cinematheques. Keeping these machines in good working condition is a necessity and a challenge. This workshop will teach you the basics of how to care for and do basic repairs on your Eiki slot load projector so that you can keep it up and running for as long as possible between actual repairs (and repair people are harder to find these days).
This workshop is offered free of charge; donations may be made to Northwest Film Forum. Registration required.
Taught by filmmaker, expanded cinema performance artist and professor Kristin Reeves, the workshop will bring together filmmakers and projectionists from around the world to learn basic techniques and troubleshooting. Kristin plans to run the workshop “like a cooking show.”
Note: while the focus of this workshop will be the Eiki 3580, those who work with closely related machines will also find this workshop helpful. There is a Bell & Howell/Eiki version of the SSL 3580. The Eiki SL model and other Eiki models should be similar enough that this workshop would be useful if you are working with those models as well.
What will be covered?
1. Basic materials and tools for repair. If you have these on hand, you can bring them to the workshop.
2. Cleaning and lubrication–where, how, why and how often.
3. How to replace and repair essentials: belts, bulbs, and focus knob tension.
4. Behind the cover–getting into the bowels of the projectors.
What should I bring? You don’t have to bring anything to the workshop, but if you have some tools available such as the ones listed below, bring them.
General: canned air, small brush(es), rubbing alcohol, microfiber cloth, lens cleaner, phillips and flathead screwdrivers, container to hold screws
More: replacement belts and bulb
For Lens Focus tension: 1/4” to 1/8” heat shrink tubing, heat gun, small Phillips screwdriver
