Animation: it’s not just cartoons, and it’s not just for kids! Even if you've never had any direct experience with animation, you’ll be surprised to discover how accessible (and fun and enriching and meditative) it can be. In this multi-session online class, we’ll explore camera-based animation techniques such as traditional stop-motion and intuitive drawing-and-erasure methods. We’ll also look at their historical context, and the ways that modern artists use them to create innovative, genre-defying work.
This class is designed for ease of use and technical accessibility. Students won’t need any special film or video equipment aside from a smartphone, some type of smartphone-compatible tripod, and a few basic craft supplies. Each session will consist of viewings, hands-on demonstrations, and short, at-home assignments that you’ll share and analyze with your classmates the following week.
