What Would You Make of a Film Performance?

  • Art In The Park 5568 Via Marisol Los Angeles, CA, 90042 United States (map)

Working with film means working with light, a process that always culminates with a projection. Therefore, the screening of a film is in some ways the most important part of the process; the moment we share, the moment light becomes the star. This workshop reflects on the language of light, what can we say with light? Does light only serve to illuminate a set? How can we use our body as an extension of the light, as a medium for light to say something more than what its main role allows it to.

In this workshop we will use fluxus practices to translate our own concepts into a performance using light sources (projectors and lamps), creating a visual symphony of light and meaning, and performing it with the materials and machines available.

Hosted by Art In The Park. FREE EVENT!

The purpose is to open an entrance to what light can be, to let go of conventional narratives and remember impulse–To insert our bodies into the screening process. It is an invitation to change the ideas we have about screenings and remember that we make the movies we see.

Sign up for free! We will provide materials for participants to create their own film performances with. Link below.

About class instructor Elena Solis:
Our artist in residence at EPFC this fall is Audiovisual artist and sculptor Elena Solis from Mexico City. Elena started out her film career at the Laboratorio Experimental de Cine in Montevideo, Uruguay. Here she learned about art film, appropriation (found footage), and film performances. She incorporates sound art into her practice and is inspired by the fluxus movement. She creates experimental video and film works and has performed her film performance Habitando el Valle (Inhabiting the Valley) in Uruguay and most recently at La Feria de Acción in Mexico in 2020. With her sister Daniela, Elena hosts art encounters called Mutacion that provide a space for female and non-binary artists to meet and present their artistic projects. In 2020 Elena began to learn pottery, merging the possibilities of clay with her two impulses of action: light and sound.
